More secret loves & buried treasures, my selection. Otherwise I would have startet with Cervantes and Twain:)
I forgot: Roald Dahl: Danny, Champion of the World.
Savagely funny, brimful of wit, energy, poetry and vision, unflaggingly entertaining. A triumph (Sunday Times)
One of the most enjoyable, funny and moving reads of this year. A rare tragicomedy that’s both genuinely tragic and genuinely comic (Guardian)
Darkly comic, dazzles, every line drips ideas for fun. Unputdownably funny, captivating. A masterpiece (Metro)
Ambitious, wise, funny, fiercely intelligent. The beauty of this cynical, hopeful, beautifully written book is that it builds a detailed world to explore life, the universe and everything (Sunday Express)
Hilarious, heartbreaking, totally engrossing. A triumph (Daily Mail)
Novels rarely come as funny and as moving as this utterly brilliant
exploration of teenhood and the anticlimax of becoming an adult . . . Skippy Dies is intuitive, truthful and one of the finest comic novels written anywhere. Dies? Never! Skippy lives
(Eileen Battersby Irish Times)
I loved Skippy Dies . . . three novels fused into one ignited tragicomic tour de force (Ali Smith Times Literary Supplement)
Skippy Dies is one great high-octane fizz bang of a book (Patrick McCabe Irish Times)
Extravagantly entertaining (New York Times Book Review)
A comic epic. Murray is a brilliant comic writer, but also humane and touching, and he captures the misery and elation, joy and anxiety of teenage life. A brilliant depiction of the heaven and hell of male adolescence (David Nicholls Guardian)
Murray’s writing has earned a place in the contemporary international canon . . . Murray’s characters are so three-dimensionally drawn and brought to such vivid life that they may haunt your dreams (Irish Independent)
Goethe: Faust I
Adalbert Stifter: Nachsommer
Laurence Stern: Tristam Shandy
Jakob Wassermann: Das Gaensemaennchen

Lajla, have you read Roderick Random by Tobias Smollett? Highly recommended.
I have only listed books between 1973 and 2009:)
Tobias George Smollett (19 March 1721 – 17 September 1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. George Orwell admired Smollett very much. His novels were amended liberally by printers; a definitive edition of each of his works was edited by Dr. O. M. Brack, Jr. to correct variants.
This is what wikipedia says. Has he been translated at all? Yes: you get the book, used, for 2:99:)
I only started this with leftfield favourites – book i loved to live in, and are not so well-known – but crafted, original, deep reading.
The canonical work is none of my business while reading. Cause: i read some of it, and it’s all deep inside far away from re-discovering it.
When it comes push to shove, my real all-time-favourite books from the canon are Huckleberry Finn, Don Quixote, Die Brüder Karamasoff, Grapes of Wrath, Rayuela, Oliver Twist, Siebenkäs, Der goldene Topf, the Edgar Allen Poe Short Story Collection, one Chandler – and one novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. So my love for crime novels is well-rooted:)
Okay, dann also meine Autoren, lieber keine konkreten Bücher:
Peter Handke
James Joyce
Peter Rühmkorf
Julio Cortazar
Patrick Modiano
David Mitchell
