A buried treasure now remastered: The Mountain Goats – All Hail West Texas

May the Mountain Goats never stop making records so long as I’m alive. This album comes right into cue with the rest of the Darnielle’s fantastic poetic gems. The liner notes offer an explanation for new initates about the boombox sound, ubiquitously and erroneously labeled „lo-fi“. Darnielle’s recordings capture some inexplicable and sublime raw intimacy, which will draw you to the brink of oblivion, if you give it half a chance. After a highly metaphorical dance with death on the Coroner’s Gambit, Darnielle’s classic wit, straight forward style, and even keyboard percussion, return. Songs like „Balance“ will remind you what it feels like to dig your own heart out with a spoon.

P.S.: Gut, die reissue lässt nich ein wenig auf sich warten, sie erscheint erst im August (auch auf Vinyl), die nächste gute Nachricht ist, dass The Mountain Goats aka John Darnielle nach Deutschland kommen. Fürs Luxor in Köln hole ich mir gleich die Karte. Anybody who wants to join?

    John Darnielle es el alma y el único componente fijo de The Mountain Goats, un proyecto por el que han pasado músicos del calibre de John Vanderslice, St. Vincent o Jon Wurster. Darnielle pasó los 90 editando pequeñas tiradas de sus discos en cassette y siete pulgadas, para entrar en los 2000 con un cambio de rumbo, abrazando la alta fidelidad y los estudios de grabación. De esta época más reciente han surgido obras fundamentales como ´Tallahassee´, ´The Sunset Tree´ o el reciente ´Trascendental Youth´. La actuación será en formato dúo con Darnielle al piano.

    Seit 1991 prägt diese Band den Folk Rock wie nur wenige andere.

    Wobei die eigentliche Konstante natürlich das Mastermind John Darnielle ist. Der Frontmann und Songwriter gilt ja eigentlich als überaus melancholischer Mensch, was aber nicht ganz stimmt. Natürlich hat er rund 600 Lieder geschrieben, in denen die Geschichten um Drogen, Alkohol, Tod und Teufel meist nicht gut ausgehen. Auf der anderen Seite ist Darnielle nicht selten auch ziemlich freundlich, höflich und wirkt entspannt und glücklich. Er ist liebender Vater, genießt veganes Essen und mag Eishockey. In erster Linie aber ist er ein fantastischer Musiker, der sich viel zu selten bei uns blicken lässt. Auf der neuen Platte entfährt ihm geradezu grimmige Heiterkeit, oder wie laut.de das formuliert: „Das Thematisieren von Krankheit, Alkohol, Drogen und Demütigungen ließe ein düsteres Ambiente vermuten, wenn da nicht der Umstand wäre, dass John Darnielles Protagonisten einfach nicht aufhören wollen, diesen Irrsinn zu überleben. Den Dämonen des Lebens stellen The Mountain Goats trotzige Heiterkeit entgegen, die sich immer wieder in sanftmütiges Einfühlen in seine hoffnungsfrohen Figuren wendet.“ Es ist fast eine Zusammenfassung des bisherigen Wirkens der Moutain Goats, die in diese Platte eingebrannt ist – auch wenn es zu früh wäre, hier schon von Alterswerk zu sprechen. Vor allem aber wird es wieder einmal Zeit, diese phänomenale Band live zu präsentieren. Am 14. Oktober spielen The Mountain Goats als Duo eine exklusive Clubshow im Kölner Luxor.

    Wäre ein guter Grund, nach Köln zu fahren. Schade, dass sie nicht auch einen Stop in Münster’s „Gleis“ machen. Wußte gar nicht, dass er (auch) vegan lebt.
