Dexys Midnight Runners have announced their first album in 27 years – but without the midnight running. Now known simply as Dexys, the band will release One Day I’m Going to Soar on 4 June.
„In the past there was Dexys Midnight Runners, now there is Dexys,“ they announced. As rumoured last year, the English band have finished recording a fourth studio album – their first since 1985’s Don’t Stand Me Down.
Dexys have posted the first two minutes of the album, from a song called Now. It begins with plaintive piano, followed by cello and Kevin Rowland’s unmistakable voice. Then everything changes at 1:16: „Attack the track, I said attack the track!“ they yell, joined by drums, horns and a lazy groove. „Oh I know that I’ve been crazy/ and that can’t be denied,“ Rowland sings. „But inside of me there’s always been a secret urge to fly.“
Formed in Birmingham in 1978, Dexys Midnight Runners were named after the drug Dexedrine, and the boundless late-night energy it gives users. Their debut album, Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, reached No 6 in 1980, and its follow-up did even better: Too-Rye-Ay peaked at No 2 in 1982, while single Come on Eileen spent four weeks at No 1. The group disbanded in 1986, reuniting for a tour 17 years later. Aside from one 2007 demo, Now is Dexys‘ first new material since the mid-80s.
