(The creative process)
With tracks, which reach far beyond the Swedish collective’s roots in jazz and experi-mental improvisation, routinely stretching over the ten-minute mark, Echoes proves that an overabundance of ideas can cohere into an immersive and thoroughly compelling gem. Anchored by the robust grooves of the rhythm section (Andreas Werliin on drums and bassist Johan Berthling) and mixed with an alluring focus on space and rhythm by alt. rock cult hero Jim O’Rourke, the two-hour epic moves seamlessly from majestically sculpted repetition and meditative minimalism to shrieking blasts of near-cacophony. With 43 musicians and singers on board, Echoes must have been carefully planned, yet it sounds refreshingly loose and spontaneous.
