Saxophonist LEE KONITZ (1927-2020) plays a key role during the 90 minutes. He also coined the title of the documentary. It is revealed at the end of the documentary and it’s to precious to tell at the moment you read this.

 

Together with Bro, Konitz played in a way that he had to get himself gradually. It was pure beauty from hidden deep down. There is this magic moment in the documentary in the Avatar studio when Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Thomas Morgan, Craig Taborn and Paul Motian recorded this simple beautiful song of Bro: the faces looking at each other after the last tone had faded tell a moving story. It is also a strong witness that they met in MUSIC not in a certain style. It was the gift of that young musician Bro to make that happen, to connect these musicians in MUSIC as their soul’s essential motion.

 

Another key role plays drummer PAUL MOTIAN (1931-2020). About MOTIAN there is also a documentary that I will post later and tell about how I connected to Jakob via Paul.

 

Jakob Bro preferred to play with certain key musicians of the older generation that not only brought in traces of the legendary past but also a life spirit. The first one who came in was legendary drummer JON CHRISTENSEN (1943-2020). He played mainly cymbals – and that in a truly amazing way as I could experience live several times. To see him playing together with trumpeter PALLE MIKKELBORG (1941) was unforgettable touching. Both. touched the essence with simple means.

    Hier jagd ja eine spannende Dokumentation die nächste.
    Meine meistgehörte Jakob Bro-Platte ist das letzte Album mit Jon Christensen.

    Bei Paul Motion sind zwei meiner Favoriten DANCE und das Album, auf dem zwei Gitarristen mitspielen, und eine Menschenmenge auf dem Cover ist (ECM touchstone CD), komme gerade nicht auf den Titel.

    Ich erinnere mich gerne zurück an ein Interview in Dortmund, mit den Herren Motian Frisell Lovano. Wenn ich mal im Archiv des DLF nachfrage, bekomme ich vielleicht Zugriff zu der Sendung über das langlebige Trio.

    Traum einer Zeitreise: 1973 oder so nach New York ins Village Vanguard, und Jarrett, Redman, Motion und Haden lauschen, wenn sie FORT YAWUH spielen. Aber dafür gibts ja auch die gleichnamige Impulse-Platte. A marvel!

    Die Doku ist vorgemerkt, muss aber erstmal Crimson at 50 nachwirken lassen.

    It really was a magic moment, but it was Ben Street on ‚Balladeering‘, not Craig Taborn. He played later, after Motian’s passing, the piano on ‚December Song‘.

    Right Marco, the magic moment in the docu was in the recording of „December Song“ in December 2012 (one year after Paul Motian’s passing). There was no drummer in the group. The docu is not chronological and it draws you in in a way that you don’t think about certain detail any more

    A tribute to an extraordinary musician calls for an extraordinary line-up, and that is what Jakob Bro and Joe Lovano have given us in their first album as co-leaders. The guitarist and saxophonist convened on the tenth anniversary of the drummer Paul Motian’s death to honour him with a septet featuring two drummers, Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy, and three bassists, Larry Grenadier, Thomas Morgan and Anders Christensen. When they play in unison, what could have been confused and cacophonous instead becomes a warm bath of sound. […] The one Motian composition is ‘Drum Music’, intense free jazz with solo and duet spots for Baron and Rossy, Bro is grungy and fuzzbox ferocious, Lovano apocalyptic and agonised, but the upshot is pure joy.

    The late American drummer Paul Motian’s balance of freedom and form underscored an elliptic pulse with a strong sense of purpose and time.     No one could spot-on-replicate Motian’s unusual drum style, which swirled around, above, below and through the pulse without ever losing control of the rhythm. So Bro and Lovano do the next best thing: they bring in two drummers. Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy both have experience with elastic percussion playing, and their rumbling roil emulates Motian’s style without copying it.

    The low end features a trio of bassists, Larry Grenadier and Thomas Morgan on double bass and Anders Christensen on electric bass, that somehow don’t step on each other’s toes, even when they’re all playing together. While all the elements are there for this septet to indulge in free form chaos, instead the group plays orchestrally, listening to and complimenting each other, even as they stay true to Motian’s concept of boundaryless post bop. Meanwhile, Lovano and Bro both turn in some of the most inspired work of their careers. […] Ultimately, it’s Lovano and Bro’s familiarity with their former boss’s aesthetic that guides ‘Once Around the Room’, and their confidence in how far and wide it ranged that makes the album a triumph.

    Yes Paul was very much into guitar and guitarists. The second album you mention, Micha, is I guess GARDEN OF EDEN with three guitarists and two bassists. The astonishing thing about that album and the live gigs in New York was, that the line-up got heavier and the music got lighter and lighter. That was Motian’s great art to achieve that with a young band. When I met him in those days, he greeted with his shattering laugh (as always) and shouted: I have now three bassists!

    Interesting that Jakob Bro also recorded an album with three bassists and two drummers, „Hymnotic/Salmodisk“. It’s a tentet and you can find a download on his website (still I hope)

    ZEITREISE: when I moved to The Netherlands and arrived in Utrecht in spring of 1976, there was this Tivoli Park in Utrecht having concerts during spring/summer in a (white) circus tent. I still remember the place in the park, the entrance and the smell. The first concert I went to after my arrival took place there. A white circus tent in Tivoli Park in the center of Utrecht. Who played there? KEITH JARRETT, DEWEY REDMAN, CHARLIE HADEN, PAUL MOTIAN … Unforgettable.

    Ich meinte TRIBUTE, Motions zweites Album dür ECM. Gibt es mit zwei versxhiedenen Covern…

    It is Paul MO-TIAN / Es ist Paul MO-TIAN

    MO-TIAN is an Armenian name. I’ll post something about Paul’s Armenian descent later. With some music shedding light on it. You can also check his famous piece „MODE IV“ yourself.

    Concerning the pronunciation of his name, Paul gave up to correct people. The title of the documentary about him uses this slip of the ear. It is „Motian in Motion“.

    Garden of Eden was the album that drew my attention to Jakob Bro.

    Ende der Achziger liefen drei Alben in Dauerschleife auf dem Plattenteller (ich „verweigerte“ lange den CD-Player wie später auch den PC): Sylvians Gone to Earth, und die zwei ECM-Motian-Trio-Platten Dance und Le Voyage, die eine Offenbarung waren.

    Anne Rottenberger hatte zu meiner Jugendzeit eine Jazzsendung bei Radio Bremen. Sie sagte immer „Mozien“. Ein Freund in Studienzeiten, der alle Platten des Schlagzeugers besass, sagte immer „Mou-schen“. Ich wusste, dass war falsch, erhob aber nie Einspruch (beziehungsweise er fiel auf fruchtlosen Boden, haha).

    Noch heute fällt es mir schwer, aus Mou-schen Mo-tian zu machen.

    Ti

    AN

    und letzte Silbe kann man deutsch oder englisch
    aussprechen. Die meisten armenischen Namen enden
    auf ‘-ian’ ‘-yan’ . Man kann’s als deutscher Muttersprachler auch ‘Motsjan’ aussprechen

    Das ist ein Film – genau so wie dieser King Crimson Streifen – den ich sehr gerne sehen würde – nur wann und wie?

    Jakob Bro begleitet mich, seitdem ich schon vor vielen Jahren hier über December’s Song las. Sehr gerne denke ich auch an ein Konzert in Hannover zurück.

    Was King Crimson at 50 angeht: diese Doku erscheint morgen in einer Packung als bluray / dvd. 29,99 Euro, eine gute Investition, denn du wirst den Film öfter sehen, das garantiere ich. Ich hatte etliche Male Goose Skin am ganzen Körper, was mit nur in Momenten völliger Ergriffenheit und völligen Berührtseins passiert.

    Ich bin total neidisch auf die Chance, den Film im großen Kino zu erleben und hoffe, dass sich die Chance auch hier noch ergeben wird (kann mir aber kaum vorstellen, wo in Berlin dieser Film gezeigt werden könnte).

    Ich hatte vor vielen Jahren mal einen Mail-Wechsel mit Jakob Bro, wo ich erwähnte, dass ich ihn gerne auch mal filmen würde, bei Aufnahmen oder so, und da erwähnte er schon, dass Jørgen Leth (geb. 1937 !) bereits an einem Projekt mit ihm arbeite, und das erst einmal Vorrang habe.
    Da war ich schon neugierig. Es liest sich auf jeden Fall nach einem Film, der voll auf meiner Wellenlänge sein dürfte.

    Ich habe die Doku von 90 Minuten inzwischen zum zweiten Mal gesehen (siehe meinen Mana-Post) und war noch mehr beeindruckt. Die Arbeit daran zieht sich ja über 14 Jahre, wobei ab 2015 Ernst gemacht wurde mit der Arbeit an einer gröszeren Doku. Die Doku war in Venedig und Lissabon zu sehen. Die dänische Premieren steht noch aus. Ist wahrscheinlich im Januar/Februar. Danach wird die Doku auf Festivals zu sehen sein. Ich denke, dass auch eine gute Chance besteht, dass sie in Arthaus Kinos gezeigt wird. Sehn wir mal.
