Zwei Cover meiner Neuvorstellungen (David Virelles, John Scofield) in den JazzFacts am 5. Mai (Deutschlandfunk, 21.05 Uhr) fanden Eingang ins Skript, zumal sie mehr enthalten als gefällige Illustrationen des jeweiligen Albums. Nur aus Zeitmangel, und um nicht zu viel im Radio über Bilder zu reden, die der Hörer nicht unbedingt vor sich sieht (ausserhalb seiner Fantasie), habe ich die Beschreibung des Covers von „Interpret It Well“ weggelassen. Bevor du liest, wie Troy Dostert das Bild beschreibt, lass es erstmal auf dich wirken. In mancher Hinsicht ist dieses Cover die perfekte Eintrittskarte zu einer nicht gerade auf Anhieb eingängigen, aber durchweg aufregenden Musik.
„Artist Raymond Pettibon provided the artwork for the album, and it is ideal in conveying the mysterious, open-ended forces at work here. A sparse landscape is depicted, perhaps somewhere in the Great Plains, with a few telephone poles and a farmstead alongside what looks to be a railroad track. But in the distance something looms: is it a tornado? Or a column of fire? Whatever it portends, one wants to discover it, and thus we are led into the richness of Smith’s vision.“
Zu dem Bild (Linolschnitt?) von David Virelles „kubanischem Trip“ „Nuna“ schrieb mir Lajla:
„Manchmal verliert man sich im Betrachten von Covers und merkt erst nach langem assoziativen Träumen, dass man ja eine CD in der Hand hält. Die rote Sonne von Afrika strahlt mich an, und ich beginne im Rhythmus der Linolschnittwellen zu tanzen. Ich höre nicht, wie oft der Hahn schon gekräht hat, der Klang der breiten einfachen Tasten haben den Schrei übertönt. So wie sie den alten weißen Mann hinterm Klavier nur surreal freigeben. Seine starken Astarme umspannen Amerika. Ein „Gracias a La vida“-Gefühl in mir.“
What else to do at home, in times of the virus? The acoustic, the electric guitar, loops – all at his hand. A cover to make you smile, at least for a moment, for such were the looks of nature, in the first lockdown – islands deserted from the tiniest idea of tourism, and the nature taking a deep, deep breath from noisy pasts. Has Mr. Scofield really been on Sylt, I do have these dejavues of course – no, he hasn‘t. Look at the buildings in the distance! The fence work. So many lonesome coasts across the ocean. Lay back, take your time. I contacted Luciano Rossetti, who did the photo for „Solo“, and this is what he wrote:

La fotografia è stata scattata nel Massachusetts, a Newburyport – Plum Island Beach il 10 aprile 2015. Ero lì con il mio carissimo amico Garrison Fewell, chitarrista americano che suonò con Herbie Hancock, Fred Hersch, George Cables, Cecil McBee, Steve LaSpina, Tal Farlow, Larry Coryell, Steve Grossman, John Tchicai, Steve Swell, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson …
Lui abitava poco distante da quel posto e ci siamo andati perchè mi aveva detto che sarebbe stato un bel posto per scattare fotografie. Lì, oltre a scattare foto all’ambiente, gli ho scattato alcuni ritratti. Quelle sono le ultime fotografie che gli ho scattato perchè Garrison sarebbe morto pochi mesi dopo. Sono particolarmente felice che ECM abbia scelto una fotografia di quella sessione per il disco di Scofield.
…ho come la sensazione che Garrison ci abbia messo lo zampino!
