Dies ist die Sportanlage des Tus Deusen im Dortmunder Nordwesten. Fast schon in der Prairie. Abseits der City, in der Nähe sind eine Mülldeponie, der Ems-Kanal und ein Steakhaus american style. In der Abenddämmerung wirkt dieser Ort, als würden bald die Lichter ausgehen, die Nacht hat ihre Fühler ausgestreckt. Wer genau hinschaut, erkennt noch eine Gestalt auf dem Feld. Da spielt tatsächlich noch einer den Ball. Wer in seiner Kindheit Fussball gespielt hat, weiss, dass man gerne noch das letzte Tageslicht ausnutzt, der Ball immer fahler und schemenhafter wird, und man gerne noch einen Treffer landet, zumindest einen guten Schuss, der ruhig von der Dunkelheit verschluckt werden kann. Als ich nach einer Weile des Schauens und Erinnerns ins Auto stieg, lag – und das ist jetzt nichts Ausgedachtes – „Magic and Loss“ von Lou Reed im Cd-Player.

I loved this article Michael! I know exactly what you are talking about – the feeling of playing for as long as you possibly can and usually for longer – until you can hardly see where you are. There’s also something magical about football pitches when they are not being used. When I was a kid, we used to love spotting football stanchions when we were in the car and our jaws dropped with wonder… I feel a topic for a blog post coming on!!

I hate to symbolize things, as if every everyday experience needs the ideal soundtrack to create a kind of extra meaning. So I found it funny that Reed“s Magic and Loss really was in the player. Elizabeth Hand wrote about it a few days ago, so I found it deep in the archive and put it on. In fact, i am not a great Reed fan, except some songs, his New York album, and his time with Velvet Underground….
