Radio after midnight comes close to mix-tapes for the loved ones

In his book HOW MUSIC WORKS David Byrne spends some valuable time, Adam Harper writes, sharing his own exprience of consuming music, in his formative years and more recently, at gigs and on MP-3 players. One particularly affecting and resonant passage explains how the rise of the cassette led to the interpersonal intimacy of mixtapes, „each song, carefully chosen with love and humour, as if to say, this is who I am, and by this tape you will know me better“.
