„The Matriarch And The Wrong Kind Of Flowers“ was recorded at the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, a tomb with a 20 second natural reverb and a constant temperature of five degrees Celsius. No surprise, then, to find a suite of solo improvisations that match the space´s cold grandeur and cavernous scale. Westerhus sites King Crimson as an influence, and „Shine“ borrows the bathysphere ping of Pink Floyd´s „Echoes“ before ascending to Popol Vuh´s vertiginous spiritual heights. Throughout, Westerhus shrouds the guitar in a series of disguises – mournful violin, hurdy-gurdy drone, country fiddle and non-musical sounds like distant guns and humming machinery – folding multiple textures in on themselves to create abstract narrative arcs.
